11 Privacy Settings to Change Before You Share More Data

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Every day, I use apps, search engines, social networks, cloud services, and connected devices that can collect more information than I realize. Some of that access is necessary, but location history, microphone permissions, advertising profiles, old login sessions, and connected apps can continue working quietly in the background.

That is why I consider privacy settings everyone should check an essential part of digital maintenance. For US smartphone and internet users, a few changes can limit unnecessary tracking without making phones, browsers, or online accounts harder to use.

What App Permissions Should I Check First?

I always start with the app permissions manager because apps can request access to my location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos, calendar, Bluetooth devices, and files. Reviewing these controls is one of the most useful hidden features on smartphones because it gives me a clearer picture of what each app can access in the background.

On an iPhone, I can review these permissions under Privacy & Security. Android menu names vary by manufacturer and operating system version, but Privacy or Security & Privacy settings generally provide permission controls or a Permission Manager.

I remove access when an app does not genuinely need the information to perform its main job. A navigation app obviously needs location data, for example, while a simple game probably does not need permanent access to my contacts or microphone.

Should I Turn Off Precise Location on My Phone?

Should I Turn Off Precise Location on My Phone?

Precise location deserves special attention because location data can reveal where I live, work, shop, travel, and spend time.

I prefer changing unnecessary access from “Always” to “While Using the App” when possible. I also disable precise location for apps that only need my approximate area. A weather app can usually give me a useful local forecast without knowing my exact coordinates.

I also periodically review location-sharing features and saved location history associated with Google, Apple, mapping apps, and social networks.

How Do I Check Camera and Microphone Access?

I review camera and microphone permissions because these sensors can capture particularly sensitive information.

Modern Android versions provide privacy controls that can help users see which apps recently accessed sensitive permissions. iPhones also display privacy indicators when the microphone or camera is active.

If an app has no legitimate reason to record audio or use my camera, I revoke access. If I need that feature later, I can grant permission again rather than leaving permanent access enabled.

Should I Limit App Tracking and Personalized Ads?

Advertising settings are easy to ignore because turning off personalized advertising does not remove ads. Instead, these controls can reduce how personal activity contributes to advertising profiles.

On an iPhone, I review Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and decide whether apps should be allowed to request permission to track me across other companies’ apps and websites.

Android privacy and advertising controls vary by Android version and device. I review Google’s advertising privacy controls and My Ad Center rather than assuming my advertising preferences are already set the way I want.

These are among the privacy settings everyone should check because cross-app and cross-site tracking can otherwise happen with very little visibility.

How Can I Make Google Delete My Activity Automatically?

How Can I Make Google Delete My Activity Automatically?

Google account history is one area I would not overlook. Google’s Privacy Checkup and activity controls let me review what gets saved to my account, including Web & App Activity and other history settings.

I can pause certain activity saving when appropriate and review Google’s available auto-delete options instead of allowing unnecessary account activity to accumulate indefinitely.

Google also provides My Ad Center, where I can manage personalized advertising settings and review how information may influence the ads I see.

Because Google changes products and account controls over time, I always check the current options inside my own account rather than relying on an old screenshot or menu guide.

What Social Media Privacy Settings Should I Change?

Social media accounts can expose far more than individual posts. I review who can see my profile, posts, stories, follower or friend lists, tagged content, contact details, check-ins, and older activity.

For personal Instagram or TikTok accounts, making the profile private can be useful when I do not want strangers freely browsing my content.

I also review Meta’s off-platform activity controls. Meta provides tools for managing information businesses and organizations share about activity away from Meta technologies. Reviewing or disconnecting this information can give me greater control over how off-platform activity is associated with my account.

Should I Hide Notifications on My Lock Screen?

Lock-screen previews are convenient, but they can reveal text messages, email subjects, authentication codes, financial notifications, calendar events, and workplace conversations without someone unlocking my phone.

I prefer showing limited notification information until the device is authenticated. This is particularly useful when I leave my phone on a desk, in a shared workspace, or anywhere another person can easily see the screen.

Which Browser Privacy Settings Should I Review?

My browser also deserves a regular privacy check.

I review third-party cookie controls, site permissions, saved passwords, location access, camera and microphone permissions, pop-ups, notifications, and browsing data.

I also remove permissions previously granted to websites I no longer use. A site I visited months ago probably does not need continuing permission to send notifications or access sensitive device features.

Browser privacy tools cannot eliminate every form of online tracking, but they can reduce unnecessary exposure.

How Do I Check Old Devices and Active Login Sessions?

How Do I Check Old Devices and Active Login Sessions?

Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Instagram, and many other major services let users review devices or sessions associated with their accounts.

I check these pages for an old smartphone, an unfamiliar browser, a computer I no longer own, or a login I do not recognize. I sign out sessions I no longer need.

This simple check matters after replacing a phone, using a shared computer, traveling, or signing into an account on a device that was not mine.

Should I Use Two-Factor Authentication or Passkeys?

Privacy controls cannot help much if someone gains access to the account itself.

I turn on two-factor authentication for important email, financial, social media, and cloud accounts. Authenticator apps, passkeys, and hardware security keys can provide stronger options than relying exclusively on SMS, although the best available method depends on the service and my circumstances.

I also use unique passwords rather than recycling one password across multiple accounts.

What Cloud and AI Privacy Settings Should I Check?

Cloud storage and AI tools have become another major privacy consideration. I may upload photos, documents, recordings, work files, or personal questions without thinking about how long that information remains available.

Before sharing sensitive material, I review data controls, chat or activity history options, connected applications, cloud synchronization, old backups, and authorized devices.

I treat confidential financial, medical, legal, workplace, or identity information with particular care and avoid uploading it simply because a service makes uploading easy.

FAQs About Protecting Your Privacy Online

1. What privacy setting should I change first?

I would start with app permissions and location access. These controls can expose sensitive information continuously, so removing unnecessary permissions delivers an immediate privacy improvement.

2. Should I turn off location services completely?

Not necessarily. Navigation, emergency features, weather services, ride-sharing apps, and other tools may need location access. I prefer limiting access according to what each app actually needs instead of disabling every location feature.

3. Does private browsing stop companies from tracking me?

Private browsing mainly limits what remains stored in that browser session on the device. It does not make me anonymous online or automatically prevent websites, internet providers, account services, or other parties from observing activity.

4. How often should I review my privacy settings?

I review them every few months and after major phone updates, installing unfamiliar apps, buying a new device, or joining a new online service. Platforms frequently add or reorganize privacy controls.

Final Thoughts

Digital privacy does not require me to stop using convenient technology. It requires me to decide which companies, applications, and websites genuinely need access to my information.

I regularly review permissions, precise location, camera and microphone access, advertising preferences, Google activity history, social media visibility, browser permissions, active sessions, cloud storage, and account authentication. Making privacy settings everyone should check part of my routine helps me limit unnecessary data collection while keeping the services I actually value.
